Frequently asked questions
Do I need an API key?
Yes. WhisperShortcut is “bring your own key” — there is no backend and no subscription. Add your Google Gemini, OpenAI, or xAI (Grok) key in Settings → General. You can also transcribe fully offline with Whisper, which needs no key. See the Features page for details.
Dictation isn't working
Make sure WhisperShortcut has Microphone access under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. If you use a cloud transcription model, also confirm your API key is valid in Settings → General.
What is the Accessibility permission for?
It is optional and used only for auto-paste — inserting dictated text at your cursor by simulating a ⌘V keystroke. Auto-paste is off by default. Without it, dictation still works: your text is always copied to the clipboard so you can paste it manually with ⌘V.
Does the app launch at login?
Only if you turn it on. Launch at Login is off by default; enable it any time in Settings → General.
Where is my data sent?
Audio and text are sent only to the AI provider whose key you configured, and are not stored by us. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
